This research paper summarises a review of the regional plans of the Regional Development Australia (RDA) committees.
RDA is a partnership between the Australian, state, territory and local governments. It is administered by the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport. Nationally, the RDA network consists of 55 committees, which work with all levels of government, business and community groups to support the growth and development of regions in urban, rural and remote areas of Australia. As part of their agreement with the Australian Government, Regional Development Australia committees are required to prepare regional plans and update them annually. These plans provide a social, economic and environmental profile of the region and also set out its economic, environmental and social vision, identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities and list priorities for action.
The purpose of the ABS' review was to understand how RDA committees were using data. This paper summarises the key economic, demographic, environmental, social, infrastructure and data issues raised by the RDA committees in their plans, because knowing about these key issues is one important way in which the ABS can understand the current and future data and analytical needs of the RDA committees.
